Why I Run: Shaun Preece

Running has never just been about miles or medals for me—it’s been the foundation that has supported every chapter of my sporting life.

I have always loved running.
I can remember running with my brothers, with my mates and with my dogs.
As a local lad, I’ve spent countless hours enjoying the freedom of the trails across Cannock Chase and running has been a constant thread throughout my life.

Running has always supported me.
At 17, when I took up kickboxing, running played a huge role in building my fitness. By the age of 20, I was teaching others kickboxing and running naturally became part of their training too. I’ve always enjoyed helping others unlock a passion and supporting them on their fitness journey.

At 35, I opened my first gym and became a coach.
When I eventually retired from competitive kickboxing, I did so as the reigning Veteran World Champion.
Even then, running continued to support me, both physically and mentally.

Around that time, my partner Paula asked for help getting fit.
I was happy to support her and soon after we noticed an advert for a new inclusive running club starting in Penkridge.
I encouraged her to give it a go. After a few months of hearing about the different sessions and seeing her confidence and ability grow, I realised this was something I would really enjoy too—and something that would continue to support my own running.

I’ve now been running with Penkridge Runners for nearly 11 years and I’ve never looked back. Penkridge Runners is more than just a running club; it’s a mindset and an attitude. It’s about welcoming, including and supporting anyone who turns up with a desire to start running, improve, or simply maintain their fitness.

Every member plays a part.
From supportive words at training sessions, to friendly Sunday run meet-ups, to recognising the hard work others are putting in and running alongside those training for marathons when they need company on the long miles—it all matters.

This is why I continue to run, and why I continue to run with Penkridge Runners.
