My Running Journey: From Gym Floors to Penkridge Runners.

My running story began simply enough.

Fresh out of university and armed with a gym membership, I set out to get properly fit for the first time.

My routine? 30 minutes of running, every session.
But staring at the same gym mirror quickly grew dull — so I decided to take it outside.
On my very first road run, I charged flat-out for about 2 miles before grinding to a sudden halt: completely breathless, lungs burning, and finishing with a very sheepish walk home.

Stubbornness kicked in after that.
I started running every Friday after work.
Eventually, a colleague talked me into signing up for the Donington Park Half Marathon.
No structured plan, no fancy training — just running as far as I could each Friday until I hit 13 miles a week.
I crossed the line in under 1 hour 52 minutes, and I was so proud.
But life moved on. Work and family took centre stage, and my running shoes sat gathering dust for years.

In 2019, we moved to Penkridge — where Grace grew up surrounded by family and friends.
Yet for me, life narrowed to little more than work and home.
By winter 2022, I realised I’d become unfit, low, and deeply isolated. I knew I needed to find a local club — running had been such a positive force in my life once, and I wanted that back.

So in January 2023, on a freezing Saturday morning, I turned up at Penkridge Middle School for Couch to 5K.
Squeezing into trainers a decade old, I was nervous — terrified, even — of showing up out of shape. But from the very first minute, the coaches and fellow runners were welcoming, warm, and endlessly encouraging.
I knew straight away I’d found the right place.

Since then, every week has brought something new.
Saturday mornings mean fun, fast-paced sessions — Indian file runs, sprints, relays — always keeping things fresh.
Wednesday nights at Rodbaston are a different kind of challenge: tough, bootcamp-style workouts that push you harder than you ever would alone.

And it’s not just about the running — the community is everything. Our annual awards night and party are absolute highlights, bringing everyone together off the track.

Through personal tough patches and battling injuries, this club has given me routine, accountability, and a reason to get out of the house when I needed it most.

The support never wavers — from social media shout-outs to earning that proud “Wednesday Warrior” nod.

From that freezing first session in worn-out kit to finishing another half marathon this month, the journey has meant more than I can say.
I feel like myself again. And I know for certain — I’ve still got faster miles ahead.
